Daybreak, 2025, is a recent favorite work of mine, using colors such as Prussian Blue, India Yellow, White, and Black. Rather than capping the smaller waves in the foreground I used significant impasto in the rearward to bring dimension and emphasize the incoming light. This painting centers on a deep, sweeping series of waves rendered in the rich Prussian blue. The color’s natural depth gives the water a dramatic, almost atmospheric weight, while subtle variations of lighter blues and cool highlights create movement within the wave’s form. The brushwork follows the curve and pull of the water, emphasizing its overwhelming, unrelenting strength without relying on overly detailed realism.

CHOPPY TIDES

Choppy Tides (2025), is a continuation of my series of wave paintings. I created this oil painting with a series of brushes, capping the waves with a white impasto. I find myself fascinated with the way that the light bounces off of the top of the waves, as if playing leap frog between sets. Choppy was created using the same 4 colors used in Daybreak, though they feature completely different textures, different tones and movements; thus the scenes look entirely different. The deeper blues fighting to take over hint at the more restless, untamable power of the ocean, while the whites wave caps attempt to contain its movement beneath the sky. This piece, and ones like it, are another way in which I am able to explore emotion and dynamic feelings in a natural scene.

TURBULENT

Turbulent (2026), is a continuation of my series of wave paintings. I created this oil painting with a series of brushes, capping the waves with a white impasto. Set to a more moody, crimson atmosphere, Turbulent embodies a more dramatic scene for people to relate to. This piece, and ones like it, are another way in which I am able to explore emotion and dynamic feelings in a natural scene.

BARRELLS

Barrels is an experimental painting exploring the movement of water and the way light interacts with it. In works like Kaiholo (2023) and Swell (2025), I have brought elements of the circular, abstracted style from previous collections into natural scenes, and here I continue that approach. This wave depiction is intentionally stylized. It does not show the traditional, crashing energy of water, but rather emphasizes the drawing, almost floating quality of the waves and the light they carry.

PHANTOM PIPELINE

Phantom Pipeline is a wave painting created using only three colors: India yellow, Prussian blue, and Zinc White. This piece was executed primarily with a palette knife, using a single brush for the wave caps. The piece captures the ocean folding into the distance, as layers of yellow sky push for visibility against the deep blues and shadows of the water. I aimed to convey the fleeting, luminous moments one experiences from within the sea itself. Further, the subtle interplay of light across the waves as it follows the water’s motion.

TIDEPOOLS

Tide pools is a painting depicting the waves reaching the shoreline of a beach. The perspective looks down at the water weaving through each of the rocks, and you can see the gradient of blue water washing back out to sea. This piece was created using nothing but a palette knife and my point paints. I love creating art related to the water, motion, the beach, and Hawaii as they are central things that I love.

Wave Adjacent is an original oil painting pushing my explorations of waves further into the realm of abstraction. Created using palette knives it is yet another wave. I was aiming to create a scene that comes out as you - one that almost feels like it is swallowing you or enveloping you in water. Though aiming for this I wanted to keep it bright, and radiant.
